Lecture on “Reading Indian History: Contributions of Swami Vivekananda”
The Interdisciplinary Centre of Swami Vivekanand Studies (ICSVC), Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a lecture on “Reading Indian History: Contributions of Swami Vivekananda,” by Neeraj Atri, Director of the Centre for Historical Research and Comparative Studies, Chandigarh. The lecture was chaired by Dr. Ashutosh Angiras from the Department of Sanskrit, S.D. College, Ambala Cantt.
Chandigarh, September 10, 2024: The Interdisciplinary Centre of Swami Vivekanand Studies (ICSVC), Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a lecture on “Reading Indian History: Contributions of Swami Vivekananda,” by Neeraj Atri, Director of the Centre for Historical Research and Comparative Studies, Chandigarh. The lecture was chaired by Dr. Ashutosh Angiras from the Department of Sanskrit, S.D. College, Ambala Cantt.
Neeraj Atri in his lecture, emphasized the significance of Swami Vivekananda's famous Chicago speech, equating it with his courageous ability to speak the truth. He also enlightened the audience by distinguishing between Religion and Dharma. He noted that many people form opinions based on their belief systems without fully understanding the textual foundations of these concepts. Atri referenced various instances where Indian history had been distorted due to political interests but concluded by stressing the importance of raising awareness about historical events to foster a more accurate understanding of India's past. The lecture was well-received, sparking extended discussions and interactions among the speakers and participants.
In his presidential remarks, Dr. Ashutosh Angiras highlighted the fundamental differences between the goals of Abrahamic religions, which focus on achievement and fate, and Sanatana Dharma, which emphasizes innate harmony through the theory of Karma.
Earlier, Prof. Shivani Sharma, Coordinator of ICSVC, extended the welcome note and introduced the theme by highlighting the epistemic violence that has contributed to a distorted understanding of Indian history.
