Lecture on the Topic “Baghdad as seen from Chandigarh: the thwarted architecture of dream cities” 

M N Sharma Architectural Society, Chandigarh in collaboration with Department of History and Department of English & Cultural Studies, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh today organised a Lecture on the Topic “Baghdad as seen from Chandigarh: the thwarted architecture of dream cities” by Louis Cyprien Rials at Mulk Raj Anand Auditorium, PU.

Chandigarh, November 7, 2024: M N Sharma Architectural Society, Chandigarh in collaboration with Department of History and Department of English & Cultural Studies, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh today organised a Lecture on the Topic “Baghdad as seen from Chandigarh: the thwarted architecture of dream cities” by Louis Cyprien Rials at Mulk Raj Anand Auditorium, PU. 

Louis Cyprien Rials is a French citizen, who spent his last 3 years studying the Iraqian architecture and how civil wars have impacted their survival. The speaker is working with UNESCO to recreate and preserve the heritage of the world especially Iraq. The lecture shed light on various monuments and heritage buildings of Iraq in the form of visual presentation and collection of pictures. 

The context between Chandigarh and Baghdad according to the speaker was the gymnasium halls built by Le Corbusier in both the cities. The building has been through different scenarios, for example, when US invaded Baghdad in 2003, the building was used as jail for several years. The speaker tried to recreate the incense of buildings and monuments that were burnt under political changes in Baghdad through interviews and pictorial research. The inclusiveness of Le Corbusier in the monuments and buildings showed the involvement of symbols, language and structures, gardens etc. in the landscape of Baghdad and its daily life sustainable was also shown through presentation. 

The lecture also talked about the inclusion of trees, plants, gardens and natural landscape in conservation of buildings, making it more inclusive for general public. 

The seminar was concluded with formal vote of thanks by Dr. Jasbir Singh, Chairperson, Department of History, Panjab University. The seminar was attended by around 180 participants including Students, Research Scholars, faculty members, non-academicians from art and architectural background etc.
