Livestock farmers trained on judicious use of antibiotics in animals

Ludhiana, October 25, 2024: The Centre for One Health, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in association with College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul, organized a two-days training program on “Improving Animal Health Practices of Livestock Farmers to Contain Antimicrobial Resistance and Promote One Health.” It was organized under a project funded by the Asian Development Bank and Zenex, India, with support from Sathguru Consultancy Management, Hyderabad. 

Dr. BK Bansal, Dean of the College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul, in inaugural address applauded the farmers' enthusiasm for participation in the training and apprised them about the livestock diseases control programmes. Dr. JS Bedi, Director of the Centre for One Health and the training coordinator briefed about the objectives of the training, focusing on the judicious use of antibiotics in animals to prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistance using one health approach. Dr. Deepali, organizing secretary, informed about zoonotic diseases transmitted from animals to humans along with their prevention and control measures.

Experts from Veterinary Varsity and Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, delivered talks and interacted with the trainees on various themes aligned of the training including animal disease prevention, control, and vaccination, judicious use of antibiotics in animals, role of alternatives to antibiotics in livestock farming, good farm management practices, clean milk production, farm biosecurity and the gender sensitization. Farmers expressed their appreciation for the quality of the training content and the expertise of the resource persons. 

Dr. JPS Gill, Vice-Chancellor of veterinary university commended the efforts of Centre for One Health and College of Veterinary Science for educating livestock farmers and building their capacity to address critical emerging issues like antimicrobial resistance and zoonoses.
