LPU organised one-day ‘Sattriya Nrityam’ Dance Fest
‘Sattriya’ dance form is one among eight national classical dances of India
Jalandhar: Designed with the purpose of promoting traditions and cultures of respective Indian states and various countries; one-day ‘Sattriya Nrityam Fest’ was organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs at LPU. It was to uphold Assamese culture at the campus. Sattriya Dance form has received the recognition in 2000 as a national classical dance to get counted among eight national ‘classical dance’ forms of India.
Famous four solo classical dancers from Assam State, who are prominent proponents of ‘Sattriya Dance’ form- Elizi Ojha, Priyanka Bayan, Nishita Parashar and Pragati Upadhyay performed their best at the fest. For all of these dancers- "Dance is world to infinity and beyond.” This virtual showcasing for LPU students was to learn and further exhibit the great Assamese heritage. Artists began their performances with Krishna Vandana and presented various episodes and sagas related with the period of Shri Krishna Avtaar through dances. It was indeed a mesmerising event for all music and dance lovers of the university
Through events like these, LPU not only provides student-artists with a comprehensive platform to showcase their talents but also propagates cultural heritage through various seminars, demonstrations, discussions, exhibitions and more by experts.
Noteworthy, Sattriya dance is a 500-year-old ritual pursuit evolved from the Bhakti movement in Assam with Srimanta Sankaradeva- saint, preacher, philosopher, poet, playwright, composer, artist and reformer. The day long performances included gayan-bayan (orations along with illustrations), dancing, singing the glory of God, and rejoicing with playing of Khol, Mridanga, Violin, Flute and more.
