LPU students led Indian Hockey trounce defending Champions ‘Argentina’; seal Quarterfinal
India defeated Argentina 3-1 to ascertain second place in pool A of the men's hockey event at the Tokyo Olympics
Jalandhar: Executing flawless drags, dribbles, flicks, pushes, shots; seven students of Lovely Professional University (LPU) have now led Indian Hockey Team seal quarterfinal at Tokyo Olympics 2020. India stormed into the games’ quarterfinal with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Argentina, which is also currently ranked seventh in the world. LPU MBA students Varun Kumar and Harmanpreet Singh scored one goal each against rival-team; whereas, their team mate Vivek Sagar Prasad managed another.
Indian Team has yet to play a match of Pool ‘A’ against Host Japan on 30th July at 3 pm IST. With three wins of four games, presently world no. 4, India is at second spot in Pool A, which is being headed by the unbeaten Australia. After a challenging 3-2 victory over New Zealand, outplaying Spain by 3-0 and now trouncing Argentina; the eight-time champion-Indian hockey team is all set, once again, in pursuit of an Olympic medal. India's last of the eight Olympic gold medals came way back at the 1980 Moscow Games.
This win over the defending champions has definitely raised the confidence level of LPU’s MBA student-Manpreet Singh led team, especially after gaining applause from all quarters. LPU has already announced coveted cash rewards for its medal winners. Congratulating team India, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal has once again invoked to keep the fiery spirit up to reach on the top.
Illustrative, India will be playing quarterfinal on First August 2021 at 6 am IST against the won out team from Pool B; on winning quarterfinal, it will compete in semi-final on 3rd August at 7am IST; and, for finals on 5th August at 3:30 pm to grab Gold. Competitions for other LPU students Neeraj Chopra (Javelin Throw), Amoj Jacob (Relay Race), Bajrang Punia (Wrestling) will commence from 4th August 2021 onwards.
