Chandigarh, February 12, 2019: Sukhpal Singh Khaira, MLA and President of Punjabi Ekta Party(PEP) today strongly condemned the gang rape of a college girl allegedly by about ten criminals near Ludhiana and described it a blot on the face of Capt Amarinder Singh government.
While demanding immediate arrest of the accused of gang rape, Khaira said that incident was horrifying and created a sense of insecurity among women. He equated the Ludhiana gang rape with Nirbhaya case of Delhi. He said that a day after Ludhiana gang rape, yet another gang rape was reported from Amritsar where a 15 year old Ludhiana girl was gang raped by an auto-rickshaw driver and his friend. In both the cases, the negligence of police has come to light.
He said that the gang rape victim, a Ludhiana college girl had gone with a friend and she went through a nightmare experience. Though approached by friend of the victim’s boy friend, the police failed to provide timely help. He demanded to dismiss the police official who failed to act in time so that it becomes a deterrent for police.
Even in second gang rape case the minor girl was raped in a hotel and Amritsar police had no inkling of crime. The victim had registered in Ludhiana a day after the crime.
Khaira said that the rise of crime against women shows the insensitivity of highly politicized Punjab Police. He said that Punjab Police was being misused to settle political scores since the times of previous SAD-BJP government and Capt. Amarinder Singh government has failed to address the issue. He said that due to political interference in the police working, the crime graph is sharply rising and criminals enjoy the political shelter.
PEP president pointed out that the plum post in the state police were done on the recommendation of MLAs and MPs and merit has taken a back seat. He said that many upright police officers were not given opportunity to serve in districts.
He said that apart from incidents of rape, the incidents of highway robberies, murders, kidnapping and gang culture is mushrooming under the present government. He sought to revamp the police force to restore law and order in Punjab.
