LUDHIANA WITNESSES Punjabi play “Teri Amrita”

Ludhiana, January 19, 2013: Ludhiana Sanskritik Samagam (LSS) presented Punjabi play “Teri Amrita” at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan here on Friday late evening.

The play has been written by famous film and play writer Javed Siddiqui.

The whole story revolves around Amrita Nigam and Zulfiquar Haider.

Bollywood actor Om Puri was in the character of Zulfiquar Haider.

And the Bollywood actress Divya Dutta played the role of Amrita Nigam.

About the play:

Basically the play was a love story. It touches the complications of human emotions and it speaks about political and social situations too.

The play looked like an experimental play- without big sets, very less stage property and lights, no background music and only two actors on the stage who kept sitting throughout the play.

But, the play had the writer’s wonderful script and poetic language, which made it mesmerising.

Both the characters belong to Lucknow, therefore, the play had a “Lucknavi” flavor in it.

The play’s tragic love story of Amrita and Zulfiquar was set over the course of 35 years. the tragedy of their love was not only because they belonged to different religions but was also because they had different temperaments and priorities in life.

The story began in the early 40’s and moved against the backdrop of India’s tumultuous history, giving the audience a glimpse of the tragedy of India’s partition, Pandit Nehru’s idealistic socialism, the dreams, the ambitions and the greed for power, which newly attained Independence gave to different sections of the society.

The Urdu play was translated into Punjabi by Amrik Gill.

The play was directed by Om Puri.
