Malerkotla, December 20, 2023: In a major breakthrough, Malerkotla Police has arrested the alleged kingpin of a railway job racket that duped multiple unemployed youths with fake appointment letters and took Rs 12 lakhs from them over years.
This is the second major arrest of a fraudster by the police in just a month. Earlier in November, an interstate job scam in Punjab Police was busted with one arrest.
The key accused has been identified as Gurbaj Singh alias Baj Singh resident of Malout, who was nabbed by a team led by SHO Inderjit Singh of Amargarh Police Station under the supervision of DSP Amargarh, Jatin Bansal.
Sharing additional information with the press, Senior Superintendent of Police Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh stated that, in response to complaints from multiple individuals, the police team, led by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Amargarh Police Station, has successfully apprehended the primary culprit involved in an intricate 12 lakh rupee railway recruitment scam. The accused had been evading arrest for the past eight years, employing tactics to alter his appearance.
Elaborating on the modus operandi, SSP Khakh said that the accused posed as an agent who could secure jobs in the Indian Railways in exchange for money. "He targeted vulnerable unemployed youth and their families over the last year, taking payments ranging from Rs 1-3 lakhs after promising appointments. However, the jobs never materialised," he added.
The accused has been charged in a case registered under Sections 420 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Amargarh police station in Malerkotla.
SSP Khakh asserted that the police has taken serious note of job rackets exploiting unemployed youth. "Strictest action as per law shall be pursued against the fraudsters involved. We appeal to the public to remain vigilant against such scams and report any suspicious incidents to the police," he stated.
The accused is being brought before a local court to be thoroughly examined in order to determine his connections and whether other people are involved in the railway job fraud.
