With mammoth 7480 Athletes’ participation 11th Annual Athletic Meet inaugurated at LPU
Jalandhar, March 15, 2019: With mammoth 7480 athletes’ participation, 11th Annual Athletic Meet inaugurated at Lovely Professional University (LPU), today. LPU School of Physical Education has chalked out ‘two-day 2018-19 Meet’ for university students, faculty members, alumni and Para-athletes with spinal cord injury. Thousands of participants from 200+ programmes of 22 Schools at LPU under 4 faculties are competing in 15 track and field events at University Sports Stadium. Maintaining Olympic traditions, the inaugural day began with competitions among talented sportspersons of the university after emblematic torch relay invocation. LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal kindled the pious flame in the cauldron, declared the meet open, and released the colourful bunch of balloons and pigeons fly free in the sky. Feeling very happy on the record and enthusiastic participation this time, Chancellor Mr Mittal congratulated the organizing body and encouraged all participants to bring glory to their respective schools and themselves. Mr Mittal also inspired university sports persons to establish new records to ensure their entry to other prestigious national and international sport-competitions. Mr Mittal informed that keeping up the promise made last year, University has provided world class sports facility in the form of the largest and the best indoor sports complex in comparison to any other university of the country. The complex with many courts for badminton, basketball, volleyball, tennis, squash & more also has all-weather swimming pool for all sports & athletics loving students. Prior to this colourful march past on drum beats was held where 40+ contingents comprising thousands of participants provided the annual meet an Olympic dimension. On the inaugural day semi-finals for shot put, discus throw, triple jump; 1500 Mts, 800 Mts, 100 Mts races; and various rounds for 400 Mts, 4x400 Mts Relay and 4x100 Mts Relays were held. In addition to students from LPU School of Physical Education, students from professional programs of Sciences, Technology, Paramedical sciences, Architecture, Journalism, Law and Fine- Arts proved no less and proved their athletic skills. Getting equal chances, LPU Distance Education students, too, competed and revealed their skills along with regular students. Para Athletes (Spinal Cord Injury affected students) also exhibited strong athletic interest. Tomorrow, on the concluding day of the meet i.e. on 16th March 2019, prizes will be distributed to all the winners of different events amid colourful closing ceremony. Along with many fun games, tug of war will also be held between faculty members’ team and alumni team. It is being anticipated that many new records will also be established this year.
