Masterclass in Film Studies by Veteran Filmmaker Rahul Rawail leaves students enthralled at Panjab University

Chandigarh, May 2, 2024: The School of Communication Studies at Panjab University, Chandigarh, orchestrated a captivating Masterclass in Film Studies led by the esteemed Indian filmmaker, Mr. Rahul Rawail, Who has directed films like Love Story (1981), Betaab (1983), Arjun (1985), Dacait (1987), Anjaam (1994), Arjun Pandit (1999) and the recent one Jo Bole So Nihaal (2005). Mr. Rawail seamlessly connected with the audience through the online medium, weaving a tapestry of insightful anecdotes and invaluable wisdom. Mr. Rawail was welcomed by Professor Archana R Singh, Senior Faculty Member and Chairperson Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti. 

The masterclass brought together an eclectic mix of attendees, including students from the MA 1st and 2nd years, esteemed faculty members, and research scholars from the department, with local cinephiles and film enthusiasts participating both online and offline.

In a poignant opening, Rahul Rawail delved into the narrative of his life, revealing his unexpected journey into the realm of filmmaking, inspired by none other than the legendary Raj Kapoor. He shared with candour, "Initially, I didn't want to enter the industry or become a filmmaker as I was more interested in Nuclear physics." Reflecting on his illustrious career, Rawail illuminated the audience with tales from his debut film "Gunehgar" and the remarkable journey of "Love Story," the only film to bear no director's name. He narrated several anecdotes about his work with Raj Kapoor and answered questions about his techniques of filmmaking.

Engaging with eager students, Rawail reminisced about his tenure as the head of the Jury for the 66th National Film Awards, offering invaluable insights into the nuances of the cinematic art form. He underscored the paramount importance of 'visualizing' in filmmaking, asserting, "I do not read or hear a story; rather, I 'see' (visualize) one."

The masterclass ended with Dr. Bhavneet Bhatti extending a vote of thanks. Dr. Bhatti lauded Rawail's anecdotes as profoundly enriching for the students, emphasizing the irreplaceable value of hands-on experience in the industry. Expressing gratitude for the invaluable session, Rawail expressed his eagerness to conduct a workshop with the students in the near future.
