Chandigarh, December 4, 2024: Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali today announced a landmark achievement of performing over 1,500 kidney transplants since its inception, becoming the first private healthcare facility in the region to offer such advanced transplant services. As one of the fastest-growing kidney transplant centers in North India, Max Hospital, Mohali performs more than 100 transplants annually, setting a high standard for quality care and innovation.
The Kidney Transplant Unit at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali has established itself as a leader in tackling complex and challenging cases. These include ABO-incompatible transplants (across different blood groups), pediatric transplants, second-time transplants, swap transplants, and robotic-assisted transplants. Recently, the team also achieved a rare medical feat by performing a third kidney transplant on a patient with two prior graft rejections.
Commenting on the landmark achievement, Dr Jagdish Sethi, Director, Kidney Transplant, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mohali stated "On behalf of our entire medical team, I am proud to share this significant milestone of completing 1,500 kidney transplants. This achievement reflects not only our advanced medical capabilities but also the unwavering trust our patients place in us. Every successful transplant symbolises hope and a renewed lease on life for someone in need. Transplants remain the gold standard for patients with end-stage kidney failure, significantly improving quality of life, reducing dependency on dialysis, and lowering mortality rates."
Dr. Sethi also highlighted the hospital's diverse patient demographic and said, "We are privileged to serve patients from across the country and beyond. While a majority of our patients come from Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, we also cater to individuals from regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Manipur, as well as international patients. This trust underscores our reputation and the impact of our care across borders," he added.
Kidney failure affects thousands of individuals annually in India, with an estimated 2,20,00 people requiring transplants each year. However, only a fraction of these needs are met due to a limited number of donors and specialised centers. Against this, currently, only about 7,500 kidney transplants are performed each year. Max Hospital, Mohali is stepping up to bridge this gap by initiating a cadaver donation program to increase the availability of donor organs and expand access to life-saving treatments. Dr Vinay Sakhuja, Senior Director, Nephrology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali said, "The demand for kidney transplants far outweighs the supply of available organs. Through our upcoming cadaver donation program, we aim to address this shortage and give hope to patients who otherwise have limited options. Our commitment is to make advanced transplant care accessible to more individuals, improving their quality of life. Our team is dedicated to achieving exceptional outcomes for both recipients and donors. The success rates of kidney transplants at our hospital are at par with the global success of kidney transplants, with most patients leading healthy, fulfilling lives post-transplant. This is a testament to the skill, dedication, and innovative approach of our medical team.”
Dr. Munish Chauhan, Associate Director - Nephrology, and Dr. Manish Singla, Senior Consultant - Department of Nephrology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, have been instrumental in providing expert care to patients with chronic kidney diseases and advancing kidney transplant outcomes.
