Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) the oldest industry organization in Tamil Nadu and the second oldest in India celebrated its 186th  Chamber Day in a grand manner at Hotel ITC Grand Chola, Chennai yesterday.

Chennai, September 30, 2022: Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) the oldest industry organization in Tamil Nadu and the second oldest in India celebrated its 186th  Chamber Day in a grand manner at Hotel ITC Grand Chola, Chennai yesterday. 

Madras Chamber is known for its several first initiatives for the overall economic development of the nation and more particularly in the State of Tamil Nadu. Advocating for ease of doing business, Playing a key role in infrastructure development of Madras in 1900s, Preparing a TN Vision Document in 2000 are some of the special edges of MCCI to mention here.

Beginning with 18 members in 1836, MCCI has 12 expert committees and 5 working committees with more than 700 members today. The 186 years old Chamber has been a key contributor to Tamil Nadu’s socio-economic development all along and now recommitted to strengthen the growth across industries in the state and the nation. 


T.R.Kesavan, President, MCCI welcomed the gathering. Lakshmi Narayanan, Co-Founder, Cognizant was the Guest of Honor for the event. V. Sriram, Writer & Historian made a presentation on “Chambers’ History” during the event. Ramkumar Shankar, Vice President, MCCI proposed the vote of Thanks. Officials & Members of the Chamber, Business leaders, Industrialists, entrepreneurs witnessed the occasion.

T.R.Kesavan, President, Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry said "The Chamber is an unique organisation in the sense it blends the old ethos and values of businesses with the new age requirements and outlooks. This is evident from our various activities and initiatives over different periods of history starting from our earlier advocacy for business friendly policies, focus on education and skilling, SMEs etc., which besides continuing, have expanded into many new horizons like Fintech, Industry 4.0, Research and Development, Climate Change and Sustainability and the like. The Chamber’s exclusive focus on the State has helped us to work in close collaboration with Govt. and other Stake holders in many of these areas”.

Since its inception the Chamber is focusing on research and innovation and working with different stakeholders together to enhance the industry development. MCCI’s future growth pathways would include Export Promotion, Education and Skilling, Arbitration, Encouraging start-ups etc.

The Chamber is also working on bringing out a Ready Reckoner or a handbook for regulatory compliances tilted “Doing Business in Tamil Nadu” by working closely with the government to encourage new investments and maintain a business-friendly climate.
