Rohtak, January 11, 2024. The three-day 36th Indian Geomorphology Institute (IGI) National Conference on Geomorphology, Environment and Society began on Saturday under the aegis of the Geography Department of MDU.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Rajbir Singh inaugurated this prestigious national conference by lighting the lamp as the chief guest. In his impressive address, VC Prof. Rajbir Singh said that geomorphologic and environmental changes are bringing forth many challenges in the form of global warming, climate change, sea level rise, geomorphologic changes and loss of biodiversity and increasing impact of natural disasters. VC Prof. Rajbir Singh said that academicians, policy makers and researchers will have to work together to find permanent solutions to the challenges posed by geomorphologic and environmental changes. This conference will be important in this direction. He also talked about making the society aware about these challenges, so that the local community and citizens understand their role and contribute to environmental protection. The Vice Chancellor also released the souvenir of this national conference and the magazine of IGI on this occasion.
In his presidential address, Prof. Sunil Kumar Day of North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong underlined the importance of geomorphology research in understanding and dealing with the environmental challenges faced in contemporary society. IGI Secretary Prof. A.R. Siddiqui emphasized the important role of academic cooperation in addressing global environmental issues.
Head, Geography Department Prof. Mehtab Singh gave the welcome address. Conference Convener Prof. Beenu Sangwan highlighted the theme of the conference. Organizing Secretary Prof. Pramod Bhardwaj expressed gratitude. Faculty members, research scholars, students, academicians and participants were present during the session. Around 175 participants from across the country including New Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh are participating in this conference.
