Mental Health Awareness Talk organised at GHSC-10

As part of ongoing celebrations of Poshan Maah, the Department of Resource Management and Extension organized a mental health awareness talk ‘Tackling the Suicide Epidemic’ for the students of M.Sc. Human Development 1st year and B.Sc. Home Science 3rd year on September 17, 2024. The event aimed to increase awareness about mental health issues and create an environment where mental health discussions are normalized and encouraged.

Chandigarh, September 17, 2024: As part of ongoing celebrations of Poshan Maah, the Department of Resource Management and Extension organized a mental health awareness talk ‘Tackling the Suicide Epidemic’ for the students of M.Sc. Human Development 1st year and B.Sc. Home Science 3rd year on September 17, 2024. The event aimed to increase awareness about mental health issues and create an environment where mental health discussions are normalized and encouraged.

Shalu Gupta, from the department was the speaker for the event. The session began with an informative and engaging presentation on mental health and the most vulnerable groups: youth, low income group, farmers and women. During the session, she highlighted that India lies on 126th place out of 143 as per the World Happiness Report 2024. She further discussed the reasons for declining mental health and emphasized the importance of understanding mental health as an integral part of overall well-being. 

A presentation on coping strategies for mental health issues was given by the M.Sc. HD students. Concluding session reported several students feeling more informed and empowered to seek help when needed.

Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal appreciated the efforts of the department in organizing this awareness talk and highlighted that such events are important to address mental health in the college setting as they contribute significantly in fostering a supportive and informed campus community. She also recommended that similar events be held regularly, incorporating feedback from attendees to continuously improve the outreach and effectiveness of mental health initiatives on campus.
