Motive to check disposal of solid waste

Ludhiana: To check the disposal of solid waste into the Budha Dariya (Nullah), iron mesh (chain link fencing) would be installed on both sides of the Nullah. Punjab Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Mr Bharat Bhushan Ashu informed that the tenders for this Rs 13.42 crore project have already been floated and this project would be carried out by funds being provided by the Ludhiana Smart City Ltd.
In a press statement issued here today, Mr Ashu stated that a total of 28 kilometres (14 km on each side) of chain link fencing of 10 feet height would be installed on both sides of the Budha Dariya within municipal limits. He said that this fencing would check the disposal of solid waste into the Budha Dariya, it would help in its beautification as tree saplings and flowers would be installed on both sides, besides providing safety for commuters and area residents.
It is pertinent to mention that the Punjab government has already approved Rs 650-crore project for rejuvenation of the Budha Dariya (total 47.55 km out of which 14 km pass through Ludhiana). Mr Ashu informed that this project is likely to be completed in next two years time. He stated that funds for this project have also been allocated in the recently concluded Budget session.
He said Buddha Dariya was an old tributary of the Sutlej River and once had more than 50 species of fish, but unfortunately it started losing its glory with the passage of time. He said that he along with Ludhiana MP Mr Ravneet Singh Bittu, had also met Union Minister of Jal Shakti Mr Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in Delhi regarding this matter. He said the cleaning and rejuvenation of the Budha Dariya was one of his dream projects and he had made a promise in this regard with the people of Ludhiana.
Mr Ashu assured the city residents when the Rs 650 crore project for rejuvenation of the Budha Dariya starts, he would personally monitor it on regular basis so that the project is completed in next two years time.
