The civic body has recently launched different projects worth around Rs 130 crore for improving solid waste management in the city. After installation of the machinery, the contractor has now commenced the disposal of fresh waste at the dump site.

The officials further stated that there was estimated around 24.62 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste at the main dump site. The project to dispose off 5 lakh metric tonnes of waste is already going on, while the bioremediation of remaining around 19.62 lakh metric tonnes is expected to commence soon. The contractor has already installed machinery at two out of four sites and directions have been issued to expedite the work. The project for bioremediation of 2 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste at Jainpur site has also been commenced and work is going on at a fast pace.

MC Joint Commissioner Ankur Mahindroo, Executive Engineer Parshotam Singh, CSI Ameer Singh Bajwa among other officials were also present during the inspection.

MLA Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal and Mayor Principal Inderjit Kaur said that due to failure of the previous governments in addressing this issue, the residents are facing trouble due to heaps of garbage, foul smell and spontaneous fire incidents reported at the main dump site of MC.

MLA Grewal and Mayor Inderjit Kaur said that Chief Minister (CM) Bhagwant Singh Mann led state government is committed for sustainable development of the state. After the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government took over the reins in the state, major projects were launched to remove these heaps of garbage and a change is now being witnessed at the ground level.

They stated that the first phase of disposing of 5 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste is already going on and the project to bioremediate the remaining around 19.62 lakh metric tonnes of waste would also commence in the coming days. After completion of these projects, the heaps of garbage at main dump site would be a thing of the past. Another project for disposing off the fresh waste generated in the city has also now commenced. Around 1100 metric tonnes of fresh waste is generated in the city on a daily basis. This project has been commenced to ensure that the waste should not get accumulated at the dump site in future.

MLA Grewal, Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Dachalwal said that they are regularly monitoring various development projects being taken up across the city to ensure that the projects are completed within stipulated time period.
