Chandigarh: BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh today hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pro-farmer policies saying that the minimum support price of the Kharif crops has been highest in recent times.

In a statement, he said it should dispel any doubts in the minds of farmers that the MSP system would be tampered with at all by the Modi government. "In fact, the Centre is encouraging farmers with hiked MSP to make more efforts to double their income by 2022", he said.

He said the highest absolute increase was for sesamum, whose MSP rose 6.6% to Rs 7,307. Groundnut saw an increase of ₹275 and ₹235 respectively. During the UPA government times, he said, farmers of these crops never received such encouragement.

He said the MSP payment to the farmers for paddy has been increased by 2.4 times during the last five years in comparison to the period when the UPA was in power.

He said while the MSP for paddy increased from Rs 1000 per qntl to Rs 1310 in the UPA times, during the NDA rule it shot up from Rs 1360 to Rs 1940 per qntl which clearly established that the Modi government was not only pro-farmers but also was making efforts to make agriculture sustainable for farmers.

In the long run, the Modi government would endeavour to double the income of farmers, he added.
