New Delhi, June 25 (HS): The southwest monsoon arrived in Delhi and Mumbai, bringing severe rain to the two cities. It is the first occasion in 62 years that a rain-bearing system has appeared in both the national capital and the country's financial centre at the same time. The last time such a rare occurrence occurred was on June 21, 1961, when the monsoon progressed over Delhi and Mumbai at the same time, according to the meteorological service. The distance between the two cities is more than 1,430 km. While the monsoon generally arrives in Delhi on June 27, it arrived two days early this year. The monsoon arrived in Mumbai on June 11, on the other hand. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it entered the city after a two-week delay.

On Sunday morning, residents of the nation's capital awoke to heavy rain, lightning, and thunderstorms. Safdarjung, the city's major meteorological station, received 47.2 mm of rain as of 5.30 a.m., while Palam in southwest Delhi received 22 mm.

According to IMD statistics, the monsoon embraced Delhi on June 30 last year, July 13 in 2021, June 25 in 2020, July 5 in 2019 and June 28 in 2018. Sunday (June 25) and Monday (June 26) have been designated as orange alert days. A yellow alert is in effect for Wednesday (June 27) and Thursday (June 28).
