New Delhi, March 5 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government on Wednesday approved ropeway projects from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath. This move is expected to reduce travel time and boost tourism. The decision has been welcomed by BJP leader and Member of Parliament Anil Baluni.
Anil Baluni thanked PM Modi for announcing the construction of two ropeways from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib.
He said: "This will make travel easier, more environment friendly, increase pilgrimage, and boost the economy of Uttarakhand. People from all over India want to visit the Kedarnath temple, and now it will be easier and safer. A large number of people will visit. These ropeways will also allow Sikhs to easily visit Hemkund Sahib."
Currently, it takes eight to nine hours to reach Kedarnath from Sonbhadra, but with the new ropeways, the journey will take only 36 minutes.
Under the leadership of PM Modi, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved two ropeway projects in Uttarakhand, worth Rs 6,811 crore. These will be developed under the Parvatmala project. The construction of the ropeways will make it easier to visit Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib.
After the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the 12.9 km long ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath will be built under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Transfer (DBFOT) model, with a total cost of Rs 4,081.28 crore.
The ropeway will be developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and will be based on the most advanced Tri-Cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, with the capacity to carry 1,800 passengers per direction per hour.
It will transport up to 18,000 passengers daily.
It is important to note that the current journey to Kedarnath Temple involves a challenging 16-kilometer climb from Gaurikund, which is completed on foot or by pony, palanquin, or helicopter.
The proposed ropeway aims to provide better facilities for pilgrims visiting the temple and ensure year-round connectivity between Sonprayag and Kedarnath.
