Premachandran, Member of Lok Sabha from Kollam constituency, Kerala, at a special session for the university’s Changemakers gathering at the Hyderabad campus to address students, academicians, and civil society members. As part of the exclusive series, global and national leaders visit GITAM campuses and share their dynamic insights, providing an outside-the-classroom learning opportunity for teachers and students.
Premachandran, a distinguished parliamentarian and central secretary of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, delivered an inspiring address to students, faculty, and esteemed guests, including GITAM University President Sribharat and Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. DS Rao, highlighting the importance of active parliamentary participation in strengthening democracy.
Premachandran’s visit brought invaluable insights into the workings of the Indian parliamentary system. In his address, Premachandran discussed the role of a responsible Parliament in shaping national policies. Drawing from his own experience, he shared the challenges and opportunities of being a part of the legislative opposition, emphasising that constructive policy contributions transcend political alignment.
He further discussed the water crisis in southern India, focusing on Kerala. He underscored the importance of sustainable water management, particularly in light of recent challenges such as the devastating floods in Wayanad. Reflecting on his tenure as Minister for Water Resources, Shri Premachandran highlighted the critical need for robust infrastructure and policy reforms to mitigate the impact of climate change and ensure the availability of clean water. He called for a collaborative approach involving government and local communities to tackle the increasing frequency of extreme weather events like floods and droughts.
Premachandran expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to interact with the bright young minds of GITAM University. "It is a rare opportunity to engage with the youth who are the torchbearers of India's future. Parliamentary democracy is the cornerstone of our nation, and it is essential that the younger generation remains hopeful and engaged," he remarked.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students posed thoughtful questions about governance, democracy, and the role of elected representatives in shaping the future of India.
