Dharamshala, February 20,2025: Lok Sabha MP Dr. Rajiv Bhardwaj has called for strict enforcement of road safety regulations in the district to curb the rising number of accidents. Chairing a meeting of the district-level road safety committee on Thursday, he emphasized the urgent need to monitor over-speeding, install traffic signboards at critical locations, and identify accident-prone areas to enhance road safety.
Dr. Bhardwaj highlighted that India records nearly 1.5 lakh road accident deaths annually, with most victims aged between 18 and 45 years. He stressed the importance of developing an intelligent traffic system, similar to the one in Dharamshala, to ensure real-time vehicle monitoring and take action against traffic rule violators.
As part of preventive measures, the MP advocated for regular eye check-up camps for drivers and improved training in driving schools. He also warned that strict action would be taken against parents or vehicle owners if minors are caught driving.
Dr. Bhardwaj also promoted the 'Good Samaritans' scheme, launched by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which rewards individuals who assist accident victims within the ‘golden hour’ by transporting them to hospitals. Such Good Samaritans will receive a certificate and a cash prize of ₹5,000.
To further spread awareness, the MP instructed concerned departments to conduct special campaigns in schools and colleges on road safety and drug abuse prevention. He also suggested using pamphlets to educate both government and private sector employees on traffic regulations.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa, Superintendent of Police (Nurpur) Ashok Ratna, SDMs of various sub-divisions, and other departmental officials.
