NAAS SERIES LECTURE AT PAU BY EMINENT BIOTECHNOLOGIST Dr T R SHARMA

Ludhiana, March 2, 2017: In a special meeting held between a team of scientists led by Dr TR Sharma, Executive Director, National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Mohali and Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, PAU, Ludhiana along with Director of Research, Heads & Scientists of different departments on March 1, 2017, it was decided that the two institutes would join hands for working together in various fields. Director of Research, Dr Ashok Kumar, welcomed the NABI scientists. Presentations related to various ongoing research activities, areas of strength and probable areas of collaborations were made by scientists of both the institutes. Mutually agreed upon collaborative areas such as crop improvement using biotechnological tools in wheat, vegetables and fruit crops have been identified. Discussions were also held for exploring possibilities of collaborative research for enhancement of nutritional value of various agricultural products, processing of agricultural and horticultural produce and use of nano-technology in agriculture. Later during the day, Dr Tilak Raj Sharma, Director (NABI) and Former Director National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology delivered a lecture on ‘Cloning and Characterization of Genes and their Application in Rice Improvements - A Success Story, under the aegis of Ludhiana Chapter of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS). Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, PAU; Dr AS Nanda, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU, and NAAS Fellows attended the lecture along with all Deans, Directors, faculty and students of the university. Dr TR Sharma presented the research work on identification, gene cloning, validation and characterization of the rice blast resistance gene Pi54 ultimately leading to its commercial utilization by the development of rice varieties carrying this gene. The lecture entailed the work carried out by Dr Sharma and his team over the last two decades which is a beautiful example of basic research leading to an applied product. A large number of students and young researchers were intrigued and had informative discussion with Dr Sharma. Dr Dhillon appreciated the speaker and encouraged PAU faculty and students to work systematically and contribute to the overall upliftment of the society. Dr Sharma was honoured with a memento by Dr B.S. Dhillon, who is also the convener of the Ludhiana chapter of the NAAS.
