NABARD's TRANG FPO Mela: A Showcase of Farmer Empowerment and Sustainable Agriculture
NABARD, in partnership with ONDC and SFAC, organized a significant event, the TRANG FPO Mela, in Ludhiana. This initiative aimed to highlight the potential of Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) in empowering small and marginal farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Ludhiana, September 7, 2024: NABARD, in partnership with ONDC and SFAC, organized a significant event, the TRANG FPO Mela, in Ludhiana. This initiative aimed to highlight the potential of Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) in empowering small and marginal farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Held at Hotel Le Barron, the mela brought together over 40 FPOs from various states, including Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, Kashmir, Karnataka, and Goa. These organizations showcased a diverse range of agricultural products, directly from the farms to the consumers. The event provided a unique platform for farmers to connect with the public and promote their produce.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by distinguished dignitaries, including Dr. Inderjit Singh, the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of GADVASU. In his address, Dr. Singh emphasized the importance of farmers utilizing government schemes and university inputs to enhance their agricultural practices. Sh. Parmesh, GM of the State Level Bankers' Committee, and Mrs. Shilpa Sinha, Zonal Manager, also attended the event and expressed their support for entrepreneurs.
Raghunath B, Chief General Manager of NABARD, Punjab RO, Chandigarh, welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted the crucial role played by NABARD in supporting FPOs. He emphasized the significance of collective marketing in empowering farmers and reducing their dependence on intermediaries.
The TRANG FPO Mela is a collective effort to showcase the potential of FPOs in promoting sustainable agriculture and providing a platform for farmers to market their produce directly to consumers. By eliminating intermediaries, FPOs can ensure that farmers receive a fair price for their produce, reducing their vulnerability to market fluctuations.
Moreover, the mela served as a valuable opportunity for consumers to learn about the benefits of purchasing directly from farmers, supporting local economies, and reducing their carbon footprint. The event also highlighted the importance of government initiatives and university support in empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
