Khanna (Ludhiana), June 23, 2023: A nail was removed from the stomach of a 1 year baby at IVY Hospital Khanna recently.
The baby had swallowed the nail accidentally and was rushed to Ivy Hospital emergency by his parents.
Dr Pulkit Dhiman, a gastroenterologist who treated the baby said that during investigations, the baby vitals were recorded besides chest X-Ray and abdominal scans showing the nail lodged in the stomach of the kid.
Foreign body particles in such young kid pose different difficulties as compared to adults due to narrow size of their esophagus (food pipe) and upper esophageal sphincter, which too a sharp foreign body and which could lead to perforation of intestinal viscera, Dr. Dhiman informed.
The baby was taken up for UGI Endoscopy after explaining all the risks of the procedure and potential complications.
We were able to extract the nail with the help of an endoscope saving the child from a major abdominal surgery at such a young age, said Dr. Dhiman.
