The narrative that India is not safe for women

Sona Chatwani, Meenakashi Lekhi addressing the press conference.

Hyderabad, October 1, 2019: The firebrand BJP National Spokesperson Meenakashi Lekhi who was in the city on Tuesday at the invitation of FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) observed that the narrative that India is not safe for women must be corrected. It is wrong narrative.

New York has more rape cases than Delhi or any other part of India, but unfortunately we are highlighted. This has to be corrected. It is a wrong narrative. Media must take responsibility in correcting this wrong propaganda. Today Delhi is the most safest place for women

Every parent expect their daughter to return home before dark by evening 6/7 pm. In fact we are making impossible for our girls to work because of this kind of narrative and parents impose restrictions. It is very unfortunate, Meenakashi, the active Parliamentarian observed.

She started her interaction with the media prior to the FLO member’s interaction, by welcoming Union Government’s decision in scrapping 370 article in Jammu & Kashmir. This is historic decision only possible due to strong political will and commitment. The people in the state were subjected to lot of injustice. The section which was supposed to be temporary was continued for 70 years.

Better late than never it had happened. Child is a god’s gift to the mankind. How can one child in the family can enjoy special status. Sensitivity of the family is that all have equal rights, she said.

Due to the special status in J & K, rights of many minorities such as Buddhists in Ladakh and tribals such as Gujjaras and others were impacted, she shared.

Only three families controlled the entire state. There was no accountability for what they have done. There were no elections held there for Panchayats for many years. Scrapping of the 370 article is granted justice to its own people she observed. People from all over India are appreciating Government’s decision she said.

When asked about continuous curfew and restrictions in J & K she said during the period of 1995-1998 when Congress was power in Centre and State, J & K was put under curfew for 294 days out of 365 days. Now here we are taking about curfew for last 60days. There is no curfew. There are restrictions. Internet is down. We don’t want our neighbour to disturb harmony with hatred online messages. It might take some time. Situation is peaceful and is under control now she said.

Tourists may return to Jammu & Kashmir at the earliest she said.

Speaking about women empowerment, women reservations bill in politics she said BJP has 33% reservations for women within the party. She also observed that there are millions of women workers at grossroot level of politics. But, there is no system to recognize them.

She later interacted with FLO members. She ruled out that she was eyeing on the Chair of the Delhi Chief Minister. As Delhi is likely to go to polls, the members asked that question in light of that background.

I have a long way to go. So I will not talk about reflections, she said referring to the subject for interaction “Experiences & Reflections”. She only shared about her journey and experience.

Meenakashi stood second with 437 questions asked in Parliament. She is quite active there. So was FLO member’s interest to listen to her. Well over 150 gathered to listen to her talk which continued little over an hour.
