National Academy of Medical Sciences awards PGI’s Dr Sonu Goel
Dr Sonu Goel, Prof at Dept. of Community Medicine & School of Public Health (DCM & SPH) in PGIMER has been awarded by the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) at an event held in Banaras.

Chandigarh, December 2, 2021: Dr Sonu Goel who is working as a Professor in the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health(DCM & SPH) in PGIMER here has been awarded  during the 61st Annual Conference of National Academy of Medical Sciences  (NAMS) held at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi recently. Dr Goel was felicitated with the Nandigudi Suryanarayana Rao Award. The award is bestowed on a public health scientist for exemplary work in the field of public health management and health administration. 

Dr Goel was chosen for his seminal research on 'Attrition and retention of medical doctors in rural and remote India' as a part of his Phd work from Maastricht University, Netherlands. During his work, he tried to find motivating and demotivating factors for a doctor to work in rural and remote areas from the perspectives of final year medical students and interns. His work in states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana led to development of two measurement scales which are first from the country. 

Dr Goel is also an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Human and Health Sciences, Swansea University, United Kingdom and an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor in Public Health Masters Program at School of Medicine, University of Limerick, Ireland. He has won many awards and honours including two orations of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine and Excellence of Public Health of India bestowed by Hon. Union Health Minister, Government of India.  He is country expert in tobacco control and currently Vice Chair, Tobacco Control section at International Union against TB and Lung Diseases. He is also Director of E-Resource Centre for Tobacco Control in India and Chief Editor of Tobacco-Free Times.
