National Science Day celebrations at DAVIET to commemorate life of Sir C V Raman

Jalandhar: National Science Day Celebrations were organized by Department of Applied Sciences to commemorate  the life of Sir C.V Raman who is credited with the discovery of Raman Effect here at DAVIET. The highlight of the celebrations was an expert talk by Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati on the topic “Role of Science and Technology in weather forecasting”.

The basic aim of celebrations was to give exposure to students about the latest discoveries in the field of weather forecasting and the achievements made by India. The celebrations are supported by  Department of Science and Technology( DST), Government of India and  Punjab State Council for Science & Technology ( PSCST).

In his talk, Dr. Sanjay introduced Meteorology as an interdisciplinary science, which deals with atmosphere, land, and ocean as an integrated system. He explained how the laws of Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry are used to understand the atmospheric, weather and climatic phenomena. According to him, even with the advancement of science and the current generation of computational facilities, it is impossible to simulate the atmosphere completely due to its chaotic nature. He deliberated about various instruments and softwares used in weather forecasting. He also discussed the scope, job opportunities and eligibility criteria in the field of Meteorology, with the students of B.Tech Ist year.
