Natural disasters are never predicted like tsunami, earth quake, cloud burst, heavy rains, floods but when natural disaster occurs its create a great havoc and loss.
Due to heavy unpredicted rainfall, cloud burst in the mountains creates havoc in the mountain areas and similarly in the plains. Even though the rivers are tamed by constructing of dams, even then sometimes heavy rains create great destruction. it was a time when in Rajasthan the people expected rains but there were scarcity of rain in the desert areas, but with the change of time and development works of canals carried out in the post-Independence period especially (Rajasthan Feeder Canal) Indira Gandhi Canal from Hari Ke Pattan and Sirhind Canal and plantation of trees in large have changed the environment of Rajasthan which is witnessing heavy rains from the past few years, even few years back Mount Abu witnessed hail storms. Every year the GoI and state government exhaust crore of funds in large number for the protection of floods. Every year it has been witnessed that most the states witness floods and unpredicted heavy rains causing heavy losses.
Former Prime Minister Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee dream was of inter linking rivers so that during floods season the flood water can be diverted to those states or areas where there is less rainfall. Similarly due to floods lacks of hectares of agriculture land is affected and the crops are damaged, if the proposal of Vajpayee would have been implemented then, the country would have to face very less flood situation. When Vajpaee came out with a proposal the opposition parties contradicted the suggestion highlighting the funds problems. Now it is up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to open this proposal of interlinking of rivers and allocate funds for this scheme.
Due to climate change and melting of glaciers few years back many countries of Europe witnessed flash floods. This year China, and Sydney in Australia etc witnessed floods. It is strange that even in the Arab countries where there was not a single drop of rain in the past are witnessing rains. This is the clear signal of climate change. If the glaciers go on melting with a high speed then the water level of sea can also show a little bit increase in its level.
Landslides are being witnessed in large number in the hilly areas during monsoons, the reason axing of trees in large number during widening of roads, infrastructure development by constructing of hotels, flats and demolishing of mountains for development works are increasing number of vehicles movement in the hilly areas. When the cloud bursts in the hilly area which cannot be predicted and this leads to flash floods.
In the current arena human being are thinking of becoming a super power but fails to understand that the Almighty is above all and natural disasters when occur create havoc, loss of life, property and crops. Even though the rivers have been tamed to some extent but the flood water always creates heavy destruction. We all should pledge to plant a sapling and similarly the union and state government should plan to celebrate van mahotsav like a festival so that more the sapling planted more the trees in coming years which will certainly keep the environment pollution free and ecological balance intact.
