New-born screening is a public health programme that helps healthcare providers identify infants with serious but treatable medical conditions. It is usually done 48 hours after the baby is born and treatment can be started within the first few days of life itself. This test uses just a drop of blood collected from the baby by heel prick. The department has started with the conditions for which neonatal screening has been proposed in Indian scenario, including, congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, cystic fibrosis and galactosemia. This venture is in line with DMC Hospital’s aim of providing the best of services available at a lower cost to the public.
