NHAI's Toll Collection Soars to Rs.55,882 Crore in FY2023-24, Gadkari to Arora in RS

Ludhiana, December 13, 2024: The user fee collection at fee plazas on National Highways has increased manifold (103.17%) during the last five years. As per the data provided by the Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Jairam Gadkari, the user fee collection at fee plazas on National Highways for the past five years is as under: 2019-20 (Rs.27,503.86 Crore), 2020-21 (Rs.27,926.67 Crore), 2021-22 (Rs.33,928.66 Crore), 2022-23 (Rs.48,032.40 Crore), 2023-24 (Rs.55,882.12 Crore). 

MP (Rajya Sabha) from Ludhiana Sanjeev Arora had asked questions on `Number of Toll Plazas on National Highways as of 2024’ in the ongoing winter session of Rajya Sabha. He had asked about the number of toll plazas on National Highways as of 2024, along with the annual revenue generated through toll collection, and how this has changed over the past five years. He had also asked about the percentage increase in vehicles using Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems in the past two years, and its impact on the average toll booth wait times and traffic congestion.

Arora said here today that the Minister further answered that as of October 2024, there are a total of 1,015 user fee plazas operational on National Highways. Government has declared all lanes of the fee plazas on National Highways to be “Fastag lane of the fee plaza” with effect from the midnight of 15th/16th February 2021 which improved the overall efficiency of user fee collection. Further, the user fee collection increases every year on account of traffic growth, revision in user fee rates, addition of new toll-able road length etc.

Adding, the Minister answered that Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) penetration on National Highways Fee plazas for the last two years is as under: 2022 (97%), 2023 (98%). The answer also mentioned that the Impact Assessment Study on FASTag System was conducted by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) through a consultant. The finding of the above study reflects that average waiting time at fee plazas has been reduced from 734 Seconds to 47 Seconds for Financial Year 2022. Congestion on fee plaza is monitored through a GIS based Toll congestion monitoring solution.
