Hongkong: A group of non-resident Indians, amidst riots in Hongkong, came out in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on January 24th. The hundreds of Demonstrators held placards along with Indian flags and were seen raising slogans in support of CAA such as ‘We support CAA’, ‘Indian Diaspora In Hongkong Supports Citizenship Amendment Act‘, ‘We Welcome Our Sisters & Brothers across the borders with Open Arms’ etc.
The activity was aimed at “dispelling the misinformation and myths” surrounding the law as well as to counter the propaganda of hate, lies and downright absurdities, the organisers, Mr Sohan Goenka, President, OFBJP,(China&Hongkong) said, The CAA seeks to provide citizenship to the minority communities, namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This will apply to the members of these communities have arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. It doesn’t violate the existing rights of any Citizen.
Raju Sabnani, Vice President, OFBJP (China & Hongkong) said that CAA would help to uphold the human rights of the people who have been persecuted for their religious beliefs in countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They will not be considered as illegal migrants. Additionally, the mandatory residence period for naturalised citizenship for these communities would be reduced to five years.
