Nuclear Power Generation to rise 3 Folds by 2031: PM’s reply to Arora’s question

The government has a plan to increase nuclear power capacity across the country by 2031, stated Dr Jitendra Singh Minister with PMO in reply to a question asked by AAP MP (Rajya Sabha) from Ludhiana Sanjeev Arora in the ongoing session of Rajya Sabha today.

Ludhiana, July 20, 2023:  The government has a plan to increase nuclear power capacity across the country by 2031, stated Dr Jitendra Singh Minister with PMO in reply to a question asked by AAP MP (Rajya Sabha) from Ludhiana Sanjeev Arora in the ongoing session of Rajya Sabha today. 

In a statement, Arora said he had asked whether government is planning to build more nuclear reactors and plants, if so, the details thereof. In reply, the Minister stated that the present installed nuclear power capacity is set to increase from 7480 MW to 22480 MW by 2031 on progressive completion of projects under construction and accorded sanction. The government has also accorded 'in principle' approval for new sites to set up nuclear reactors in future.

In reply to Arora’s question about the quantum of power produced in India by using nuclear technology, the Minister mentioned that the present installed nuclear power capacity in the country is 7480 MW comprising of 23 nuclear power reactors. In the year 2022-23, nuclear power reactors generated 46982 million units of electricity (including infirm generation).

Arora had also asked for the details of nuclear power produced, State/UT-wise and the reply by the Minister revealed that there are four units at Tarapur (Maharashtra) with a total capacity of 1400 MWs, six units Rawatbhata (Rajasthan) with a total capacity of 1180 MWs, four units at Kalpakkam and Kudankulam (Tamil Nadu) with a total capacity of 2440 MWs, two units at Narora (Uttar Pradesh) with a total capacity of 440 MWs, three units at Kakrapar (Gujarat) with a total capacity of 1140 MWs and four units at Kaiga (Karnataka) with a total capacity of 880 MWs.

Arora said the Minister's reply further mentioned that one unit at Rawatbhata (Rajasthan) is under extended shutdown for techno-economic assessment while two units at Tarapur (Maharashtra), one unit each at Rawatbhata (Rajasthan) and Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu) are presently under project mode and one unit at Kakrapar (Gujarat) is being operated at 90% power.
