Olympic Day celebrated with fervour at Ludhiana
All the basketball coaches were present on the occasion
Ludhiana: Sportspeople gathered in large numbers at Guru Nanak Dev Stadium, Ludhiana to celebrate the June, 23rd International Olympic Day . On this occasion players mostly of basketball and athletics who throng for daily practice were addressed by officials of PBA. Incidentally, the get-together to mark the celebration was held in front of the Olympic stone memorial at the stadium which was put up at the time of the National Games in the year 2000.This reads the philosophy of a city based Olympic Philosopher Prof. Baljit Singh Grewal who penned the Olympic motto for 1968 Mexico Games which found official acceptance. It reads: “To distill human strength into speed and skill and to elevate mankind’s mind above the weakness of reward and recognition, is the sole purpose of sports”.
Teja Singh Dhaliwal informed the International Olympic Committee (IOC ) this day in 1894 formally took the decision to start international competitions every four year. But, the celebrations of the Olympic Day every year started in 1948 with a motive that nations keep active throughout the year to learn about competitive sports. He wished the Indian participants in upcoming Tokyo Olympics will earn winning laurels for the country. Brij Bhushan Goyal , a sports promoter from DBA who floated the idea of celebrations for this day some years back at this stadium said that it has now caught the fancy of schools and colleges and at other stadiums in the state. Yurinder Singh Hayer(IPS) , a Sr. VP of PBA hoped that Punjab will soon certainly start sending more players in the national pool of Olympic players in coming years.
