The Department of Statistics at Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated National Statistics Day by organizing an Online Special Lecture on Empowering Governance with Statistical Wisdom: History, Principles and Vision 2047 on Saturday from 10.30 a.m. onwards.
Chandigarh, June 29, 2024: The Department of Statistics at Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated National Statistics Day by organizing an Online Special Lecture on Empowering Governance with Statistical Wisdom: History, Principles and Vision 2047 on Saturday from 10.30 a.m. onwards.
The special lecture has drawn many participants which includes faculty members, alumni members, research scholars and students from Panjab University and institutes like Amity University, IIT Patna, Kurukshetra University, NSOU Kolkata, SRM Institute Chennai and from other parts of India. Moreover, the participants are from diverse disciplines such as Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science and Statistics.
Highlighting the special lecture’s significance, Prof. Narinder Kumar, Chairperson of the Department of Statistics, Panjab University, emphasized the importance of National Statistics Day which is an annual event celebrated in India on June 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the father of Indian statistics, Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. Prof. Mahalanobis, as member of India’s first planning commission, played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). He was awarded one of the highest civilian awards, the Padma Vibhushan from the Government of India for his contribution to Statistics.
The resource person for the lecture was Prof. Jitendra Kumar from the Department of Statistics Central University of Rajasthan, Kishangarh, Rajasthan. He delivered talk on the topic “Empowering Governance with Statistical Wisdom: History, Principles and Vision 2047”. The speaker discussed in detail about Statistics and Statistical System, Governance, Vision 2047, Statistical wisdom and Statistics for developed India in 2047.
Ramesh Gupta, alumni of the Department of Statistics, who retired as Director, Labour Bureau, Govt. of India also shared his thoughts on the Indian Statistical System.
The event ended with vote of thanks by Harminder Singh Deosi, System Administrator, Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
