“Oral Health and Hygiene” Workshop organised at Samarth

Chandigarh, June 2, 2022: Enactus SSBUICET team of Panjab University with support of Colgate-Palmolive organized an Oral Health & Hygiene workshop for the specially abled and the staff of Samarth, a residence for the special children in Sector-15, Chandigarh. This workshop was held keeping in mind the extensive dental care required for these special children by their parents and attendants, conveyed Prof. Seema Kapoor, Faculty Advisor of Enactus team.

Dr. Kapoor highlighted during her address that it is very important to maintain oral hygiene as the health of mouth, teeth and gums affect the general health. The mouth is the entry point to digestive and respiratory tracts, so without proper oral hygiene, the bad bacteria can enter the body and can cause various diseases like heart disease, cancer, pneumonia, diabetes, etc. She said as these children are unable to express their ailments accurately, so it is all the more important to take care of their oral hygiene and reduce their sufferings.

Dr. Arun Bansal, Administrator, Social Substance, an NPO of Panjab University emphasised during his talk that once in every 3-4 months, dental check-up of these special children is necessary. He gave simple tips for maintaining the oral hygiene of these specially abled like brushing their teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time, one before going to bed and other after breakfast, using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste, giving them a healthy diet and limiting sugary food and drinks, replacing their toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if bristles are wornand contacting the dentist as soon as an oral health problem arises.

The special children and staff were provided with Colgate toothpastes, Colgate Toothbrushes along with refreshments sponsored by a 1976 alumnus of Chemical Engineering Dept of Panjab University, told Akshit Kalra, President, Enactus team. A healthy mouth enables not only nutrition of the physical body, but also enhances social interaction and promotes self-esteem, averred Dea Batra, content head of Enactus team. Others enactus members who organized this event included Sonali, Vice President, Chetan Wadhwa, Project Head, Harsh Sharma, Technical Head, along with Priyam and Anmol, members of Tasveerbaazi Club of department.

Puja. President, Parents/Guardians Society for the Welfare of Mentally Handicapped Children appreciated the heartfelt efforts of the team and said that the Enactus team under the leadership of Dr. Kapoor is doing exemplary societal work and also informed that the team has been celebrating Diwali and other functions with these special children since last many years. She was grateful to the team for making efforts to help the children of Samarth especially during the Corona-19 pandemic.
