Ferozepur, October 26, 2012: The Powercom has started getting benefits now with the installation of electricity meter outside the houses to check the ‘kundi’ (unauthorised) connections.

Since the taking of decision of Powercom to install the meters outside the houses, the department got success of about ten per cent units, in other words, saving crores of rupees on account of power theft.

While disclosing this,  S. K. Batra, Superintending Engineer, Powercom said, the work shifting of meters outside the houses is being done speedily and more than 45,000 meters, in 375 villages falling in Ferozepur Circle have been installed outside the houses and about another 10,000 are yet to be done.

He further said, the target for installing of meters outside the houses in Ferozepur City and Cantt is 36,000 meters and out of which 24,000 in City and 6,500 have installed and for rest of the meters, the departmental officials are already on the job and it is likely to take sometime.

Likewise, in Ferozepur Cantt, about 10,000 meters are to be installed outside the house out of which the work of 2500 meters have been completed and for rest of the work, the company officials have been advised to complete it at the earliest.

Batra said, the Powercom is likely to get benefit of about 5 lakh units when the entire work of shifting of meters outside the houses is completed and the department revenue will increase in crores of rupees.  The officials have been directed to complete the meter shifting work at the earliest and daily monitoring is being done by the headquaters at Patiala.

He, however, admitted that the officials had been facing tough time in villages while shifting the meters outside the house whereas there had been no reaction in the cities on this account. The shifting of meters is objected by only those people who are doing theft of power supply but the department is paying no need to their protest.

He further shared, normally power theft is not now possible from electronic meters but some habitual people habitual  power theft are using  the tactics of lodging complaint of a meter theft or put the meter in disorder by sparking of a live wire. The department is working on this theory also so that such people do not get benefit of even these excuses.
