Over 90 percent panchayats in Ludhiana vows against stubble burning, passes resolutions
847 of total 941gram panchayats joined hands with administration to make Ludhiana stubble burning free district
Ludhiana: Accepting the appeal of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ludhiana Varinder Kumar Sharma to ensure zero stubble burning in the villages, over 90 per cent gram panchayats in the district have passed resolutions with a vow to not put matchstick to paddy residue left in the field.
As per the information, there are total 941 gram-panchayats in the Ludhiana district of which 847 have joined hands with the district administration and passed resolutions against the stubble burning menace.
Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma appreciated the efforts of the panchayats to stamp out the unhealthy practice of stubble burning and also urged remaining panchayats to cooperate with the district administration in making the Ludhiana a zero stubble burning district.
Deputy Commissioner said that the administration is making concerted efforts in these trying situations to defeat the coronavirus in the larger public interest and save precious lives. He once again appealed farmers to abstain from burning paddy stubble citing that besides polluting the environment, hazardous gasses might aggravate the COVID-19 situation and could cost lives.
District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO) Peeyush Chander said that they are expecting all the gram panchayats will pass similar resolutions in coming few days and help the district administration in making Ludhiana a stubble burning free district.
Meanwhile, Gurdwaras in villages were also involved by the district administration in appealing farmers not to burn crop residue in open fields.
