Panchayats lend support to administration, keep night vigil to guard embankments
DC lauds community participation, says collective efforts prevent more losses
Ludhiana, July 12, 2023: To keep constant watch on the flow of the floodwater in the Doraha canal, Thikri pehra’ or night vigil in the villages helped in further breach and safeguard the embankments.
The teams of administration along with the Army and residents of the nearby villages including Rajgarh, Katana, Rampur and others remained on the field and ensured the situation did not go out of hand. The Doraha canal has reported two breaches so far and plugged immediately with the collective efforts of all stakeholders. They kept a hawk eye on the flow of the canal carried soil in their tractors and dumped it on the embankments to strengthen them besides keeping sandbags ready to deal with any urgent situation.
Payal SDM Jasleen Kaur Bhullar said that priority was given to the immediate strengthen of the embankments besides safe evacuation of people from areas. She said that public announcements were made through Gurudwaras and other worship places and people of these villages used to gather at a common place and worked shoulder to shoulder with administration. She said that MG-Nrega workers were also deployed to fill sand bags.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik said that the state government led by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was committed to providing relief to the flood hit people. She said that massive efforts were afoot for ensuring that normalcy was restored at the earliest in the villages.
Malik lauded the fulsome support extended by the villagers and said that their efforts helped the administration in preventing further losses.
