Panel Discussion in PU Chandigarh

Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh today organised a panel discussion on ‘Punjab, Trauma and Punjabi Novelistic Discourse’ was organized on two Novels entitled ‘Man Pankhi Bhayo’ of Dr. Manmohan & ‘Chaurasi Lakh Yadan’ of Jasbir Mand.

Panel Discussion in PU Chandigarh

Chandigarh, April 21, 2025: Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh today organised a panel discussion on ‘Punjab, Trauma and Punjabi Novelistic Discourse’ was organized on two Novels entitled ‘Man Pankhi Bhayo’ of Dr. Manmohan & ‘Chaurasi Lakh Yadan’ of Jasbir Mand.
In the welcome address, Prof. Gurpal Singh, Academic-in-Charge of the Department introduced novelists and the main themes of the Novels. He remarked that novels are the utmost way of conveying the message to all types of audience as it gives a spectacular picture of the situation and circumstances.
In the First session of Panel Discussion Dr. Manjinder Singh and Dr. Sukhwinder Singh, presented their papers on Novel ‘Man Pankhi Bhayo’. Dr. Manmohan remarked that 1947 should be remembered as cruel attack on humanity where Punjab and its habitants suffered the most.
In the second Session Dr. Jasbir Singh and Dr. Jaspreet Kaur presented their research papers on Novel ‘Chaurasi Lakh Yadan’. The main focus of the papers was to provide historical, sociological, anthropological and cultural insight of Punjab and Punjabi literature.  The Novelist Jasbir Mand interacted with audience and provided the background that urged him to write this novel.
In his presidential address, Prof. Sarbjit Singh, remarked that Punjabi novels are a new genre popularized in the modern day. Novels connect masses easily. Punjabi literary tradition has its unique meaning and style. Punjabi ethos has its distinguished features. 1947 and 1984 are two unforgettable incidents of Sikh Psyche. It impacts deeply  the Sikh Community and their collective consciousness.
At the end of session, Dr. Gurpal Singh gave a vote of thanks and also emphasized that these two novels provide a wide spectrum of pre-partition and post-partition period, particularly during the troubled times of Punjab. The main characters of the novels represent the real socio-psychological scenario of Punjab and Punjabi society.
 On this occasion, Dr. Rajesh Jaiswal, Dr. Praveen Kumar, Dr. Harmail Singh, Amandeep Singh, Sanjay Kumar and many others attended the event and shared their views. Stage was conducted by Parmveer Singh.  Many litterateurs, research scholars, guests and students participated in the event
