Panjab University celebrates Independence Day with enthusiasm and patriotic fervour

Chandigarh, August 16, 2016: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh celebrated Independence Day with enthusiasm and patriotic fervour.
Former (GoC-In-C) Western Command Chandimandir, Lt. Gen. K.J. Singh, PVSM, AVSM (BAR) (Retd.) alongwith PU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Arun Kumar Grover unfurled the National Flag at the Parade Ground of the University. Lt. Gen. K.J. Singh (Retd.) was the Chief Guest.
Patriotic songs and dance performances were part of the celebrations at PU. Students of PU Music Department, Ankur School, PU campus and GGSVM Sr Secondary School Ratwara Sahib presented the Cultural programme depicting love for motherland and nationalism. PU Security, PU campus NCC Boys & Girls Cadets and school children led by Security Officer Ashok Kumar Gautam also participated in the March Past.
Addressing the function, Lt. Gen. K.J. Singh (Retd.) said that the independence did not mean independence to do anything but rather it mean independence to do the rightful things. He expressed his happiness and gratitude for being associated with Panjab University as Maharaja Ranjit Singh Chair Professor.
Addressing the gathering, PU VC Prof Grover listed achievements and initiatives of the University. He described year 2015-16 as a challenging year for PU and referred to various long term initiatives taken to counter the challenges before the University.
“The permanent solution to University’s economical problems and the reforms in University Accounts and Audit practices were the priority in previous year. The University has reconstituted the Internal Quality Assurance Cell(IQAC) and Research Promotion Cell(RPC) and gave it permanence. Perhaps we are the first such university in the country”, Prof Grover said.
“The Governing bodies of PU have proposed to enhance the internal resources of the university at a certain rate which offsets the rate of inflation, and if the grants from Union Government match the said rate, the budget upto the end of financial year 2016-17 can be balanced”, Prof Grover said.
“A pay panel of UGC is expected to visit PU Campus on August 29, 2016, to seek suggestions on revision of pay scales of University teachers and employees as per recommendation of 7th pay commission for central Government Employees. However, PU’s immediate concern is to balance the books in the regime of 6th Pay Commission”, added Prof Grover.
On this occasion, Senior Associate Professor from PU Department of Chemistry Dr Surinder Sharma (Retd) was honoured with Commendation Certificate, memento and cash prize. PU Employees namely Dhrub Dev, Sh Sandeep Grover, Sh Dharamvir, Sh Raghu Ram and temporary cleaner at PU Horticulture Department Sh Sonu and Sh Sanjay were also honoured for their distinguished services.
NSS volunteer Jashandeep Kaur and Yudhvir Singh were honoured with PU Roll of Honour on the occasion. UIET student Ms Anayat Kaur was honoured for winning the silver medal in team event during international Youth Archery Festival at South Korea from July 21 to July 27, 2016.
Eight PU NCC cadets namely Ms Harmandeep Kaur, Ms Simrat Kaur, Ms Gurparteek Kaur, Vartika Bisht, Mr Ashish Rana, Mr Manpreet Singh, Mr Nishant and Mr Kumar Vikram for exceptional performances in various camps.
Earlier, the PU Registrar Col GS Chadha (Retd.) welcomed the Chief Guest and the participants. Professor in PU Department of Music Prof Pankaj Mala Sharma conducted the stage.
PU Dean University Instructions, Prof Dinesh Gupta, PU Fellows, the teaching, non-teaching staff members, their family members, large number of Research Scholars and Students also participated in the Independence Day celebrations at PU.
