Panjab University Celebrates World AIDS Day with Awareness Session on HIV and Drugs Prevention
In observance of World AIDS Day, Panjab University organised an interactive awareness session on "The Role of Youth in HIV and Drugs Prevention" at Mata Gujri Hall, Girls Hostel No. 1, today.
Chandigarh, December 1, 2024: In observance of World AIDS Day, Panjab University organised an interactive awareness session on "The Role of Youth in HIV and Drugs Prevention" at Mata Gujri Hall, Girls Hostel No. 1, today.
The event was organised by Dr. Smita Sharma, Warden of Girls Hostel No. 1, and attended by social worker and faculty member at the Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, Dr. Gaurav Gaur; Dean of Students' Welfare (Women), Dr. Smirit Kahlon; and Dr. Indu Sharma. Hostel residents actively participated in the discussion, showing keen interest in the topic.
In his talk, Dr. Gaurav Gaur discussed the stigma associated with HIV and emphasised the crucial role that youth can play in bringing individuals living with HIV into the mainstream. He also sensitised the residents about the risks posed by syringes commonly used by many youth to inject drugs, stressing how these practices can contribute to the transmission of HIV. He also highlighted the importance of mental health awareness, peer support, and the various resources available for youth both within the university and across the Chandigarh region.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Smirit Kahlon, Dean of Students' Welfare (Women), emphasised the importance of such sessions and recommended that similar initiatives be conducted across all Panjab University hostels to ensure that students are well-informed and equipped to combat HIV and drug abuse.
The session concluded on a positive note, with students expressing their commitment to promoting awareness and prevention efforts.
