Panjab University Chandigarh celebrates Constitution Day
Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, celebrated 75th Constitution Day with great enthusiasm and reverence today.
Chandigarh November 26, 2024: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, celebrated 75th Constitution Day with great enthusiasm and reverence today.
The event was led by PU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Renu Vig, with active participation from teachers and students across various university departments. In various functions organised today, they solemnly read the Preamble of the Indian Constitution.
Marking the 75th anniversary of India's Constitution Adoption, Prof. Vig paid rich tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for his pivotal role in shaping the Constitution. She stressed the importance of the day and highlighted the Constitution's role in earmarking clear roles for the executive, judiciary, and legislature. She also emphasised key provisions of the Constitution, including its commitment to justice, equality, and freedom for all citizens.
About 20 faculty members, students, and staff members of the Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension attended the celebration on "Constitutional Day (Samvidhan Diwas)" at the department. They undertook the prescribed pledge on this occasion.
Dr. Parmjit Singh Kang, Chairperson of the Department of Lifelong Learning & Extension, elaborated on the history of Constitution-making. He explained that the Constituent Assembly of India took approximately two years to prepare one of the longest and most elaborate Constitutions. While the Constitution was completed by November 26, 1949, it was not formally implemented on this date to honour the significance of January 26, 1929. It was formally adopted on November 26, 1949, with some parts operationalised, and it was fully implemented on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated annually as Republic Day with great pomp and show.
Dr. Kang also informed participants about the meaning of "Republic" and the importance of the Preamble. He read out the entire Preamble to the audience.
Dr. Kang emphasised that all the rights and developments enjoyed by citizens of India are because of this Constitution, urging everyone to respect and uphold it with full commitment.
