Chandigarh, February 17, 2025: The National Service Scheme (NSS), Panjab University, Chandigarh, today distributed Shawls and promoted Education at Dhanas (Adopted Village) under the direction of Dr. Parveen Goyal, Programme Coordinator, NSS, Panjab University, and Dr. Sonia Sharma, Programme Officer, NSS. The event was graced by Dr. Vineet Punia, Director, Public Relations, Panjab University, as the Chief Guest, with Prof. Shankar Sehgal as guest of honor.

The event began with an awareness session for the residents, highlighting the importance of waste segregation and literacy. Volunteers emphasised the need for proper waste disposal to maintain cleanliness and sustainability in the village. Additionally, parents were encouraged to prioritise education, particularly for girls, reinforcing the belief that “if a girl is educated, the whole family gets educated.”

As part of the initiative, shawls were distributed to underprivileged residents, particularly the elderly, to provide warmth and comfort during the winter season. NSS volunteers actively engaged with the villagers, fostering a spirit of empathy and solidarity.

The NSS unit of Panjab University has been at the forefront of various social initiatives, encouraging students to contribute to nation-building through selfless service. With a focus on community engagement, environmental sustainability, and awareness campaigns, the unit regularly organises activities that align with the core values of NSS—service, education, and empowerment.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Punia commended the PU NSS volunteers for their dedication to serving society. “Through such initiatives, we not only extend support to those in need but also inspire young minds to contribute meaningfully to the community".

The event was a huge success, with enthusiastic participation from the residents. They expressed their gratitude for the thoughtful gesture, appreciating the Panjab University’s continuous efforts towards social upliftment. This initiative is part of a series of outreach programmes undertaken by Panjab University NSS to support marginalised communities.
