Panjab University’s Botany Department sets new standards for Environment Sustainability

Chandigarh, October 29, 2024: Department of Botany, Panjab University today hosted a Freshers’ Party, Jashan-E-Taleemat, for the newly admitted U.G./ P.G. students in the department.  The event was graced by the esteemed Guest of Honour, PU Dean of Alumni Relations Prof. Latika Sharma.

The event showcased exceptional student talent through energetic dance performances, humorous skits, culminating in the coveted titles of Mr. & Ms. Fresher. The unique feature of the event was its plastic free nature. The department shunned any kind of plastic decorations.  Instead of it, the department used flowers (such as marigold, chrysanthemum, rose or Senna) and leaves from pruned teak trees, making the event green and clean with a touch of elegance.

After the event was over, the waste of flowers was sent to an Industry in Una (H.P.) for the production of charcoal and chemical-free incense sticks. The event successfully showcased the eco-friendly practice of three ‘Rs’ (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse) leading to the generation of a valuable product from the flowers. Thus, instead of spreading piles of unhealthy plastic waste, the fragrant incense sticks so generated would have a soothing effect on the minds of people.

Prof. Latika Sharma was highly impressed by this novel effort of the students and remarked “Though ephemeral, the flowers’ fragrance will radiate far beyond the event, filling countless homes with sweetness, thereby spreading the joy of Freshers’ party beyond the University walls”.

The event was highly appreciated by the Chairperson of Botany Department, Prof. Kamal Jit Singh under whose leadership the event was organized, and also by the other faculty members of the Department. The goal of the event was to strengthen the need for reducing the unnecessary load on Mother Nature and improving our ecological footprints.
