Chandigarh September 2, 2024: Dr. Sucha Singh, Assistant Professor in Geography, Centre for Distance and Online Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh presented his research paper on the topic entitled “Farmers’ perception of climate change, its impact on their livelihood and adaptation decisions in mountain agriculture: evidence from Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, India” on the invitation of the prestigious “35th International Geographical Congress 2024” held from 24-30August, in Dublin City University (DCU), Dublin, Ireland.
The research examined farmers’ perceptions, its impacts and adaptation to climatic changes, using 240 farmer’s primary field survey data from three elevation zones of Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. The results showed that the climatic changes posed severe risks to the livelihoods of mountain farming communities of all three zones particularly elevation zone of above 3250 meters mean sea level in the Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. The study further reveals the farmers are adopting various autonomous climate adaptation measures in response to climatic changes. The findings of the study will be useful to state government for policy and institutional interventions specifically organizing trainings and programmes and setting up of infrastructure on climate smart agriculture in the three elevation zones. The co-author of the paper was Asim Charas, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh who collected the intensive field survey data.
