Paragliding World Cup inaugurated at Bir Billing amid growing popularity and safety concerns

Dharamshala, November 2, 2924:  The prestigious Paragliding World Cup commenced in Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh, drawing 94 pilots from 26 countries, including 32 Indian participants, seven of whom are women. The eight-day event, inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Chairman and Tourism Development Board Vice-Chairman (Cabinet Rank) R.S. Bali, showcases Bir Billing as a globally renowned site, lauded for its unique conditions and long flight paths, attracting paragliders worldwide. Bali emphasized that hosting such an event brings immense pride to Himachal Pradesh and elevates its status on the global adventure sports map.

The state government is providing robust support for the event, contributing Rs. 35 lakh for its organization, along with recent investments of Rs. 60 lakh for landing site enhancements and Rs. 7 lakh for other necessary facilities. Additionally, safety measures have been heightened, with two helicopters, seven medical teams, and six rescue units stationed to ensure participant safety.

The inauguration was marked by a traditional Shanti Havan ceremony for the safety and success of the event, with international participants taking part, reflecting India's cultural warmth and hospitality. Chief Parliamentary Secretary Kishori Lal and other dignitaries, including BPA President Anurag Sharma, and local leaders, were present to extend their support.

However, safety concerns have shadowed the excitement, as Bir Billing has recently seen a series of accidents, including a high-profile incident involving a mid-air collision between a Belgian and Polish paraglider. The rise in fatalities has sparked criticism from former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar, in a press note issued here today  highlighted the unfinished Paragliding Training Centre, initiated eight years ago under the leadership of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. Although an Rs. 8 crore building for the training center was completed three years ago, the facility remains non-operational due to incomplete regulations, prompting Shanta Kumar to call for immediate government action to ensure proper training and mitigate risks.
To enhance the visitor experience, the Himachal Pradesh government has organized a cultural carnival from November 6 to 8, aiming to showcase the region’s rich heritage. The event promises to immerse foreign guests in the vibrant culture of Dev Bhoomi Himachal through evening performances, enriching the overall ambiance of the competition.

Despite the recent safety challenges, the Paragliding World Cup has reignited global interest in Bir Billing as a paragliding hotspot, underscoring both the immense potential for adventure tourism and the pressing need for improved safety regulations.
