Ludhiana, December 2, 2024: Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying has conducted a study on Demand of Milk and Milk Product in India under National Dairy Plan Phase I (NDP-I) scheme. As per the study, the demand projections of milk and milk products for the year 2030 at All India level is 266.5 million metric tonnes against a current production of 231 million tonnes.

This has been stated by Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh in an answer to a question on milk production in the country asked by MP (Rajya Sabha) from Ludhiana Sanjeev Arora in the ongoing Winter Session of Rajya Sabha.

In a statement here on today, Arora said the Minister further mentioned in his reply that according to the study, it is estimated that the consumption of milk products in the rural sector is going to witness a massive jump by 2030 and the consumption will be significantly higher than urban areas.

As per the study, the total consumption at the All-India level in 2019 (including household and non- residential consumption) was 162.4 million metric tonnes for milk and milk products. During 2019 urban areas had a larger share in consumption of milk than that of rural areas while the milk products consumption was larger in rural areas in comparison to urban areas.

The Minister’s answer further mentioned that Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying is implementing dairy development schemes that provides for financial assistance for quality and accessibility through National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) and Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) schemes to complement and supplement the efforts of the State Government for Dairy based Industry.

It has also been mentioned in the answer that State-wise estimation of milk, meat, egg, and wool production is done by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying annually through Integrated Sample Survey conducted through State Animal Husbandry Department.

As per the data made available by the Minister, the total volume of milk production in the country during FY 2022-23 was approximately 231 million tonnes. Of this, Punjab contributed 14 million tonnes which is 6% of total country’s production, ranking 7th in the country. Uttar Pradesh leads the nation with a milk production of 36 million tonnes amounts to 16%, followed by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and then Punjab.
