PAU advises farmers on managing whitefly in cotton crops following RRS Bathinda Survey

Ludhiana, July 17, 2024: A team of scientists from the Regional Research Station (RRS) Bathinda conducted a comprehensive survey of cotton fields in various locations within the Sangat Block of Bathinda district. The visit aimed to assess crop health and identify pest and disease issues affecting the cotton crop. During the survey, a significant surge in the whitefly population was observed, with levels exceeding the Economic Threshold Level (ETL) in most of the surveyed fields. Farmers were advised to manage the whitefly population by spraying the insecticides suggested by PAU, Ludhiana.

The team reported no incidences of Pink Bollworm infestation in the cotton crops at farmers' fields. However, moth catch traps placed in several locations indicated the presence of moths, highlighting a potential risk for future infestations. Farmers were also advised on weed management to prevent competition for nutrients and resources. Stunted plant growth was also noted, indicative of nutrient deficiencies, heat, or pest stress.

PAU Scientists have urged immediate action to address these concerns, safeguard cotton crops, and ensure a better yield this season by adopting the university's recommendations. They reiterated that the RRS Bathinda team is committed to monitoring the situation closely and providing further guidance and support as needed.
