PAU Experts advise farmers to monitor maize and vegetable crops

Ludhiana: During the live programme today, experts of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have advised the farmers to monitor their maize and vegetable crops regularly for the control of insect-pests.

Cautioning the farmers against the attack of fall armyworm in maize, Dr Jawala Jindal, Senior Entomologist (Maize), said: “In 2016, fall armyworm spread to many parts of Central and West Africa and by 2018, it had also knocked at the Southern states of India. Due to its ability of rapid spread by long flight (100 km per night), it spread throughout the maize growing areas of India. The fall armyworm infestation was also found in Punjab state in late Kharif maize in 2019.” Dr Jindal advised the farmers to continuously survey the crop and adopt PAU recommendations for the control of this pest.

Dr Ravinder Singh Chandi, Assistant Entomologist, warned the farmers against the attack of insect-pests (whitefly, thrip, etc.) on vegetables like brinjal, okra and chilli and urged them to follow PAU Package of Practices for their management. He also explained PAU fruit fly trap technology, which is an eco-friendly technology.
