PAU extends MoU with Syngenta India Ltd. for farm sustainability

Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU and Bipin Solanki, Managing Director and Territory Head, Syngenta South Asia signed the MoU on behalf their respective institution and organisation. 

Ludhiana, December 10, 2014: For the prosperity of small farmers and agricultural sustainability, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has extended its agreement with Syngenta India Ltd., Pune, one of country’s leading agri-business companies, for three years. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU and Bipin Solanki, Managing Director and Territory Head, Syngenta South Asia signed the memorandum of understanding on behalf their respective institution and organisation. It is pertinent to mention here that earlier, PAU signed MoU with Syngenta in 2008 and 2011.

The pact was inked in the presence of Dr Balwinder Singh, Director of Research; Dr R.S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education; Dr Chander Mohan, Additional Director Communication; Dr G.S. Buttar, Head, Agronomy; and other faculty members of the University.

Appreciating the progress of the on-going projects between PAU and Syngenta, Dr Dhillon said that this collaboration will go a long way in benefiting the farmers as well as strengthening the joint conversation. He suggested that the both the sides can work together on seed treatment and mechanical transplanting. Emphasising on timely application of inputs in different crops, Dr Dhillon stressed on equipping the farmers with the PAU recommendations.

Solanki said that PAU is an internationally known University and that they are proud to be partners with this agricultural varsity. He said that this joint venture aims to support projects on the education of farmers and evolving crop solutions for productivity enhancement. Stating that partnership with PAU over the past few years has been very fruitful, he said that Syngenta and PAU are working together to make the farmers aware about farm technologies in different cropping systems.

Dr Balwinder Singh suggested tie-up in the areas of direct seeded rice technology, integrated pest management and spraying application techniques. Besides, he also wished to have cooperation in promoting cultivation of maize and sugarcane for diversification.

Earlier, while welcoming the dignitaries and delegation members, Dr Chander Mohan, Additional Director Communication said that PAU has always been working sincerely for the upliftment of the farmers.

In his presentation on “Syngenta Overview and Growth Strategy,” Praveen Kathuria, Head of Sales, Synegnta said that their specific emphasis is on enhancing farm productivity in sustainable ways. “With Indian population estimated to touch 1.7 billion by 2050, our prime focus is on “Grow more from less,” he highlighted.

Stating that success can be achieved with team work, Tarun Berry, Territory Portfolio Lead, Syngenta presented the review of joint project between PAU and Syngenta.
